It was a great night at Salem Golf Club for our “Taste of North Salem” event! There was delicious food donated and served by favorite local restaurants, an amazing display of student artwork, music by Trillium Acoustic, and reuniting of old friends and meeting new! We truly have the BEST community! We depend on your support to enhance students’ day-to-day experience, celebrate their academic and athletic endeavors and accomplishments, recognize our hard working teachers and staff, maintain traditions, fund scholarships and more. We couldn’t do it without you! On behalf of the NS MSHS PTO and the Athletic Booster Club, thank you so much for an absolutely lovely evening and the huge success of this fundraiser! Please be sure to visit our incredibly generous local sponsors: Aversano’s, Blazer Pub, Farmer & the Fish, Frank’s Pizza, General Bakeshop, Harvest Moon, Hayfields, Pouring Rein, Salem Golf Club, and Wandering Dave’s! - North Salem Middle/High School PTO & Athletic Booster Club

Click here to view December 2020's PTO presentation designed to help parents address the anxiety, trauma and grief surrounding the unpredictable nature of daily life for families during this challenging time. The presentation was led by Anthony Puliafico, Director at Columbia University Clinic for Anxiety & Related Disorders, and Courtney DeAngelis, a clinical psychologist who specializes in child trauma and grief at CUCARD.
In response to parent feedback requesting added channels of communication about the types of after-school activities available to middle school and high school students, Mr. DiGrandi announced a new Clubs and Activities resource on the MS/HS website. Parents and students can now view a list of clubs, meeting dates and times, whether the club is accepting new members, and other information on the web site. From the MS/HS home page, click on Students at the top of the page, then Clubs and Activities to see the information. The school is also piloting a new 2:15 start time for after-school clubs so students no longer have to choose between playing a sport and participating in non-athletic activities. After-school help will continue to be offered at the same time, and students who miss a club meeting to attend after-school help will not be penalized.
Melissa Smith, accompanied by a group of brave and compassionate high school students, spoke at December's PTO meeting about the new Warriors Brain Health and Wellness Club. Geared toward students in grades 8-12, the goal of this organization is to enhance mental health literacy through discussions, classroom presentations, and public speaking; to bring visuals and resources into the schools; and to make reaching out for support more acceptable through peer-based activities. Students in grades 6 and 7 will also have a chance to participate through crafts and other age-appropriate projects led by the older students.
89 students, parents, and NS MS/HS teachers, staff and administrators responded to the survey, and North Salem’s favorite reads are. . .
Author:
The Hate U Give (Angie Thomas) High school students also enjoyed books by Sarah J. Maas, while parents gave a special mention to John Irving. Teachers and staff each chose a different favorite author, ranging from William Shakespeare to Jodi Picoult and Ernest Hemingway to Agatha Christie. Thanks to all who participated in the survey! Check out some of North Salem’s favorites and many more titles and authors at the MS/HS Book Fair, Monday through Friday, 11/26 to 11/30, in the MS/HS Library. On November 3, more than 125 parents and community members came together at Salem Golf Club for a night of food and friendship. The "Taste of North Salem" event was originally scheduled to take place at Harvest Moon, but when the autumn chill set in, Salem Golf Club graciously offered use of its beautiful banquet room. More than a dozen restaurants donated food, beverages and giveaways. Thanks to all participants for supporting our MS/HS students and athletic programs! Our special appreciation goes out to Aversano's Restaurant, The Blazer Pub, Bull & Barrel Brew Pub, The Creek, DeCicco & Sons, Fork in the Road, Frank's Pizzeria, Harvest Moon Orchard, Hayfield's Peach Lake Market & BBQ, Purdy's Farmer & The Fish, Salem Golf Club, and SC. Fin Grill Room. Thank you also to Robin Sandor, for organizing the event and donating her signature cupcakes, and Brewster Mobil for donating flowers! On October 16, the PTO hosted the first PTO meeting of the year. Marcella Moran, MA, LMHC, a licensed psychotherapist who works with families to develop a personalized organizational system for students of all ages, shared strategies to help students create academic processes that work best for them. Ms. Moran is the co-author of Organizing the Disorganized Child (Harper Collins, 2009)
Thanks to everyone who came out for the Wine & Cheese Night hosted jointly by the PQ and MS/HS PTO. Over 50 North Salem parents attended, including several who are new to the district. It was a wonderful opportunity to catch up and meet new people, as well as discuss things important to our community. A special thanks to Robin Sandor for putting together a beautiful spread, and to Mitra Grant for donating wine from her family vineyard!
